There was something I saw in my practice for years and it was common with almost every single patient I saw in my office. Hormonal imbalances. They came in all shapes and sizes from the Ghrelin hormone (overweight, always hungry, exhausted) the Insulin hormone ( weight gain or loss, sleeplessness, irritability, brain fog, dizziness and light headed) Cortisol (anxiety, anxiety, anxiety! The spare tire around the waist, flabby muscles, thin skin, hungry, snarky, blue) Adiponectin (Can’t lose weight, cramping) and Leptin (cause sleep deprivation, appetite and energy instability)
Our modern culture is swimming in all of these stress related, crazy, busy lives hormonal storms
So what to do?
1) I suggest a three fold daily routine….Prayer or meditation, exercise and essential oils.
The Prayer and meditation is one of the strongest components to relaxation and balancing hormones. Pick a Psalm and repeat it, find a word that comforts you and breathe it in and blow out anything that is stressing you. Imagine the stress has a color or a shape of a word. Slow breathing is one of the BEST ways to balance hormones. As far as exercise, I find walking in nature and yoga are my two favorite ways to relax my nervous systems. Some people like to swim or run (for me that would trigger my hormones as I am very competitive) but it comforts and relaxes some body types. Essential oils work beautifully to balance the brains response to stress. I love Stress Away, Joy, Palmarosa and Lavender. Lemon and Vetiver are also extremely helpful and Rosemary works specifically on cortisol.
Finally your food suggestions are mineral rich produce (avacado, dark leafy greens, sea vegetables) as well as Omega 3 fish and flax. All of these things plus no caffeine, sugar, dairy and wheat will help you sleep better and feel more balanced and alive!!!! Isn’t that a wonderful thing?
